The premise
Each episode—each Platter Chat—is a vinyl-only listening party featuring discs that we love, across many genres. Our one guiding principle is that no preparation should be done before each Platter Chat. Many of our hosts have worked in radio and, frankly, are loathe to re-enter that rat race. Platter Chatter is devoted to the pure joy of listening to music and sharing it with friends. Listening parties should be effortless and that's our primary goal.
We'll even play records that we have not pre-listened to. After 30 seconds or so, chief discographer Woody Acousticat will decide whether a track is a "Hit or a Hiss."
The host
Jeremy Butler hosted All Things Acoustic on Alabama Public Radio for 32 years—ostensibly retiring from radio on March 6, 2026. Part of the impetus behind Platter Chatter is for him to listen to almost 300 albums he acquired during that time, but never actually slapped on a turntable.
Jeremy has had a long and varied career in college and NPR radio—starting as a college DJ at WBRU (Brown University) in 1972 and continuing in that role at WNUR (Northwestern University). In the 1980s, he joined George Hadjidakis as a co-host of Progressions on WVUA (University of Alabama), which ended about 1987. He developed All Things Acoustic in 1993.
